I think we all remember our first patient we lost. AND we all remember the fist one lost to a code.
Hang in there, don't let the feeling discourage you -but don't forget the feeling either. That feeling will help you and your future patients stay out of harms way.
Stay strong.

my instructor told me that anything and everything that is wrong with a patient can be listed under the
Admission history
Neuro
CV
PULM
GI/GU

And I agree.

Everyone is different. I've been working nights for a few years now, and I have learned (a) I can't eat much overnight or I get queasy, (b) if I drink coffee at 11 and 3 I stay awake for work but can still fall asleep when I get home, and (c) there's no point for me trying to sleep all day before my first night shift in a row. But other nurses are different. I come home from work and go straight to bed; others stay up a while and sleep later (I'm usually up by 3 or 4 pm, which would be a terrible morning equivalent). Some people eat all night. Some people never can adjust to night shift. I'm glad I can, because I just don't like day shift---never have. Trial and error is the way to go! Final point: 12-hour shifts will make you feel half-dead no matter WHEN you're working them!

It's a very surreal experience isn't it? No amount of code blue simulations can prepare you for your first one. I'm thankful for you that you experienced it as a student, where you had a preceptor by your side and peers/professors to help you debrief. That is a gift to take advantage of!

You will be an incredible PICU nurse, I have no doubt!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and wishing me congrats! I love your writing style. Your post on the code was eloquent and lovely and I really enjoyed reading it. Good luck to you in the next few months as you finish up!

I really enjoyed reading this post. It is something I think about a lot. I am not sure what I would do in a situation like this. I have done scenarios and practiced on robots, but I have no clue how I will react in the flesh of it all. And when it is my time, I'll be "the youngest in the room with big glasses and, most likely, panicked eyes- bent over a small bed looking like a kid trying to save a kid." Granted I am 6 ft. 3 so I'll be bent a little more than others.
