I agree that she sounds very clueless. I don't know if I could've been as nice as you. However, if she is only 3 weeks in, she probably hasn't learned what nursing is about yet.

The sad truth is that most people, even those who have been hospital patients, even prospective nursing students, don't understand what nurses do unless they personally know a nurse.

I mean, people only know what they *see* nurses do, they don't know what goes on in our heads.

The first 6 months of my nursing degree, most of us were hanging out to get to the "real" nurse stuff. (Rather than learn about the healthcare system and theories of primary health care.)

Unbelievable! Don't worry... I'm sure a reality check is right around the corner! As nursing school intensifies, she'll see exactly how much assessing we nurses do.

The ability to observe/assess with complete focus, is the difference between a good nurse/doc and weak nurse/doc. The one's that don't know to even do it, are hopeless.

They are usually only thinking of themselves and their own problems.

Laney:

Great post! Can't wait to include it at CoS.

Yes, I once told a coworker of mine's husband that we are paid to notice details.

If that ain't part of assessment, nothing is!

I totally agree with you about the interviews! They should definitely be mandatory.
I'm gonna have to check that book out.

wow. That is crazy. I agree that nursing has a big image problem. There's a book about it - "From Silence to Voice: What Nurses Know and must Communicate to the Public". People like the young woman you described make me wonder about some schools' no-interviewing policies. The school I am applying to (which shall remain nameless....) emphasizes that they DO NOT interview ANY of their applicants. This is a top nursing school, and no interviews. Personally, I think interviews can be priceless - you can assess passion, interest, personality.....I would think that in a profession like nursing, interviews would be mandatory. But, nope. oh well.

Whaaaa?!?!?! How can you be in nursing school and have no idea what nurses DO? I think NotRached has a point -- nursing has a real big image problem.

I agree!! I can't wrap my head around how you could not know that. My school was crazy about assessing. I mean, ADPIE- its the A! It's not even the E. Geez.
I'm glad to hear there are more exploding heads going around.
